Xiaomi used its second major automotive technology event in Beijing on July 30, 2026 to do more than reveal two new SUVs. The company launched the Kunlun architecture, its first platform for extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and opened pre-sales for the Xiaomi Pengcheng N70 Max and N90 Max at RMB 259,900 and RMB 299,900 respectively, ahead of a formal market launch in September 2026. For Xiaomi, this marks a strategic expansion beyond battery EVs like the SU7 and YU7 into China’s highest-volume family SUV segment—while trying to answer lingering questions around safety, technology sourcing, and brand credibility.

One of the most technically interesting parts of the presentation focused on cabin packaging rather than headline acceleration or screen count. Xiaomi said its research into owners of large “9-series” SUVs found a common complaint: vehicles may be physically large, but their interior layouts waste space.

Xiaomi’s solution was to redesign the underfloor structure to create a flatter, more usable interior floor.

Key engineering changes included:

  • Rear electric drive switched to a coaxial layout
  • Power electronics moved forward, lowering the floor above the e-drive by 145 mm
  • Battery control modules relocated from beneath the second row to the front and rear of the vehicle

This suggests Xiaomi is being cautious: sell capability, but avoid overpromising autonomy in an environment where both regulators and consumers are scrutinizing ADAS claims more closely.

If there was one message repeated throughout the event, it was safety. Lei Jun reportedly returned to the phrase “safety above all” multiple times.

That emphasis was not accidental. Xiaomi Auto has faced public debate over issues including:
